Summary

A noted neuroscientist reveals groundbreaking research on how fitness and exercise can combat mental health conditions such as anxiety, dementia, ADHD, and depression, and offers a plan for improving focus, creativity, and sleep。

Jennifer Heisz shares paradigm-shifting research on how exercise affects the brain, finding that intervals of intense workouts, or even leisurely walks, help stop depression and dementia, lessen anxiety and ADHD, and encourage better sleep, creativity, and resilience。 Physical inactivity is the greatest risk factor contributing to dementia and anxiety—it’s as much a factor as genetics。 In addition, exercise’s anti-inflammatory properties make it the most effective treatment strategy for those who are depressed and don’t respond to anti-depressants。 The book focuses on overcoming inertia; using exercise to help fight addictions; how we can improve our memory with fitness even as we age; and, importantly, how exercise can help us sleep better, improve focus, and be more creative。 Included are easy to use plans for unique aerobic and resistance workouts designed to strengthen the brain。

Great book!! Inspires me to stay committed to walking and the gym for more reasons than simply burning calories! And at my age sleep can be a challenge- and who doesn’t want to try to prevent dementia - this explains an easy to understand way how to do just that! A timely read for those who dealt with extra stress on mental health due to the pandemic and quarantines。 Highly recommend!!

Didn’t care for the layout of the book。 I felt as if I was reading someone’s journal。 So, I didn’t find it helpful to me。

If I could I’d give this book 10 stars! It’s well researched and brings positive light on how exercise heals the body。 Exercise has such negative connotations to some people that this book is necessary to bring a better relationship with movement for many people。

I cannot explain how much I needed this book。 I have had quite a bit of traumatic things happen in the past few years and literally feel like I crawled in a hole。 After reading this book I have felt myself coming out of this hole。 I attribute this to therapy and things I've learned in this book。 Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ability to read this book in advance。 I cannot explain how much I needed this book。 I have had quite a bit of traumatic things happen in the past few years and literally feel like I crawled in a hole。 After reading this book I have felt myself coming out of this hole。 I attribute this to therapy and things I've learned in this book。 Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ability to read this book in advance。 。。。more

The body positivity movement is so important, yet it has impacted how I view and feel about moving my body。 For better and worse。 Similar to the sex positivity movement, if we look critically, we find areas that the movement ignores or even hinders。 (That’s why I’m more aligned with the sex responsibility movement, which doesn’t shame ‘vanilla’ preferences and calls for accountability。) All that to say, I’ve had a hard time finding my why to exercise。 I don’t want people to think I’m obsessed or The body positivity movement is so important, yet it has impacted how I view and feel about moving my body。 For better and worse。 Similar to the sex positivity movement, if we look critically, we find areas that the movement ignores or even hinders。 (That’s why I’m more aligned with the sex responsibility movement, which doesn’t shame ‘vanilla’ preferences and calls for accountability。) All that to say, I’ve had a hard time finding my why to exercise。 I don’t want people to think I’m obsessed or care about changing how I look。 I don’t want to hear, “You’re beautiful just the way you are!” Cause I know, thanks。 Move the Body, Heal the Mind came into my life at the perfect time because now I have multiple whys for exercising: to improve my mental health, immune response, sleep, creativity, and more。I have anxiety, depression, and OCD, so I was nervous about how this book would discuss mental illness, especially medication vs。 exercise。 Because my meds honestly saved my life。 But I learned that, for many people who don’t respond to medication, low levels of serotonin isn’t the root cause but inflammation in the brain due to extended stress or sickness。 But get this—mental health professionals don’t test for information but instead treat all patients as if they have low serotonin。 Wow, right? Turns out, no matter the cause, exercise helps both responders and non-responders。Also, for those of you like me who have found it hard to stick to your health plan in the past no matter how much you plan, this book shows how it’s not your fault but your brain’s focus。 You should definitely read more, but essentially, all your goals and planning is needed— until you start exercising。 Then you need to focus on the experience。If you’re looking for your why or find psychology fascinating, pick up this book!FAVORITE QUOTES* “Bigger is not always better when it comes to an immune response。 Too much inflammation’s bad for the body, and the consequences range from trivial to tragic。”* “When the brain’s inflamed, it metabolizes tryptophan, creating a toxic by-product that damages the hippocampus。 This makes it harder to turn off the stress response, and this, creates even more stressed-out called and inflammation。”* “Exercising muscles release special Ed cytokines called myokines 。 。 。 With consistent training, 。 。 。 the body becomes less inflamed。”* “Exercise is medicine that we all need。 And I do mean all of us。 Not just drug-resistant non-responders, but responders too。”* “Exercising more during the day helps us pay back our sleep debt faster so that we can wake up feeling more refreshed and recharged。”* “By training your body to move more creatively, you train your mind to think more creatively。”* “You can train to enhance both focus and creativity, but your training program must include unpredictability, cross-training, and play。” 。。。more

CREATIVITY, AND SLEEP。BY JENNIFER HEISZ, PhDI was initially on the fence and reluctant to read this book and am so grateful to the Author, Dr。 Jennifer Heisz, and Mariner books Publishing that I did read it。 What a fascinating book about the neuroscience of the brain regarding all the benefits of exercise and its power to heal the body and mind simultaneously。 I have gained so much crucial information it has by far exceeded my expectations and is easily one of the most important books that I have read as far as motivating me to start a daily exercise regimen。 The reason for this book catching my attention is I was hoping it would motivate me to start running again and provide an explanation as to why I have found it so difficult to do something that brought me such joy and happiness in the past。 This book is exactly what I needed and I thoroughly enjoyed it so much that I have read it twice and it is one that I will return to over and over because it literally has changed my life。 I can honestly say that it is probably the most important book that I can ever remember reading because it is the wake up call that I needed。I am very impressed with how it is written in such a conversational style about the biochemistry and the anatomical regions of the brain and how crucial it is for me to start moving again if I want the quality of life to not decline。 By reading this I am convinced that exercise is so integral to so many facets of staying healthy as I age。 I was always such an active person until 2017 when I had a life changing circumstance that was as stressful as it gets。 One thing kept happening after another since and I knew on every level that exercise would benefit me the most。 Instead, I forfeited a one year paid in advance gym membership along with several paid in advance personal training sessions。 I chose to escape the pain by reading a book per day sitting from morning until dinner except to get something to eat or take bathroom breaks。 The Author so eloquently explains why this is so harmful to both the body and the mind if one doesn't get up and move around if not for every half hour than at a minimum every two hours。 She states that being sedentary is as harmful as smoking。 I can happily say that as a child I was very active and as a teenager I rode my ten speed bicycle everywhere。 If I wasn't walking somewhere I was riding my bike for miles。 Part of the reason I didn't go to the gym in 2017 was because I sacrificed my brand new car letting my two son's each drive it leaving me landlocked。 Family always has and always will mean everything to me。 It actually made me feel good knowing I was helping my two sons' out because they didn't have their own vehicles and they each used my car from 2017 through 2019 to get to work。 I usually was reading when not doing housework or socializing with friends。 I find myself now at a point where my muscles have atrophied and I have lost so much cardiovascular strength that I know now just because I read and am thin that isn't enough to prevent dementia。I always had a stationary bike and a treadmill and I also got rid of them because my oldest son didn't like that my treadmill was in the corner of the kitchen and my stationary bike was in a corner of the living room。 Now, I wish that I had kept both of them because both son's are not living at home and they were like new。 I live in New England which is famous for its four Seasons but in the last few years we have experienced just two months of Summer and the rest of the year it is Winter。 That makes it harder to take walks。 Like this Author points out you don't need any fancy gym equipment and she provides illustrations with written text explaining step by step how to do the many, many exercises she provides。 Most of them I know from my training with free weights but there are some I haven't heard of。I always used to have a gym membership and I one-hundred percent agree with the Author that exercising with a group to music is so much fun。 I also was a person who ran up to ten miles everyday and I enjoyed the colder temperatures but I will need to make a trip to my old running store because I plan to start exercising sooner rather than later and to run outside I am going to need the running clothes that are made for it since they wick moisture away from the body and it's amazing how hot you get once you warm up and I plan on going at least four miles building myself up to add more distance。 I am going to definitely need to alternate slowly jogging alternating with walking for recovery to start。 At this point I may only be able to walk briskly because I have deconditioned my heart muscle which is the most important muscle of all。 I do remember the runner's high that I would get as endorphins would flood my brain。 My best runs were done outside year around and I hope that I can do it。 Author, Jennifer Heisz, PhD has written an engaging book that touches on how hard it is to start exercising and why it is difficult to stick with it if you don't pick something that you enjoy doing。 She also emphasizes that it is the experience that we have to focus on and not the goal。 She devotes her first chapter on why it is so hard to start exercising and why we have to schedule it into our day otherwise we will always be too busy and that is so true。 I used to always get a schedule of the classes taught and when I ran I would write how many miles I went on a given day in a running log。 I agree with her about so much that she has taught me。 She also has written a whole chapter about sleep and how exercising helps you sleep deeper and emphasizes how important it is to not be sleep deprived。 This is one of those books that I highly, highly recommend because there is something in there for everyone。 Definitely, read this book if you are at any age because the Author takes neuroscience of the brain backed up by meticulous research and makes it easy to understand。 I will return to it as I think I already said it but it is the most important book that I have ever read and I only hope that my review does it justice because I not only enjoyed it immensely it's information is footnoted and backed up by case studies。 Jennifer Heisz, PhD。 is somebody who I wish I could meet because she is funny also。 I laughed when she refers to the treadmill in her Lab as the dreadmill。 Isn't that the truth? I definitely needed music or to listen to a podcast when I ran on mine or used it at the gym。 She not only knows a lot about pharmacology she entertains with backing up everything she has written by a length of scientific journals and no matter how much I thought I knew I learned that I needed this book and I can't thank her enough for teaching me that the quality of life can only get better with exercise。Publication Date: March 8, 2022I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Net Galley, Dr。 Jennifer Heisz and Mariner Books Publishing for generously providing me with my Arc in exchange for a fair and honest review。 All opinions are my own。#MovetheBodyHealtheMind #DrJenniferHeisz #MarinerBooksPublishing #NetGalley 。。。more

While I'm familiar with the notion that exercise is a healer of many thing, just by the virtue of the release of Dopamine, this was an interesting reinforcement of knowledge I already had, supported by a number of scientific journals and research from all sides。This book doesn't fall into the trap of the author starting with "If I can do it, anyone can," which was a relief, as everyone works at their own pace, and this book is keen to reinforce that lesson first。 You're not given exercise plans While I'm familiar with the notion that exercise is a healer of many thing, just by the virtue of the release of Dopamine, this was an interesting reinforcement of knowledge I already had, supported by a number of scientific journals and research from all sides。This book doesn't fall into the trap of the author starting with "If I can do it, anyone can," which was a relief, as everyone works at their own pace, and this book is keen to reinforce that lesson first。 You're not given exercise plans and instructions on what to follow and how fast you should progress, but you are given the simple understanding that the more you do, the easier it's likely to be become and the more likely you are to follow through on the rest of the plan。 It's a simple enough concept, well articulated, and with sufficient instruction within to ensure that you know how to use every part of it。 。。。more

To know the answer, let me aks you this: when friends or acquaintances tell you "Oh, don't be sad/depressed! Enjoy life!" do you miraculously feel better? This book, "Move the Body, Heal the Mind", was different。Sure, it's based on the mental and physical health journey of the author, but at the same time everything that it's being said is backed up by studies and research。 And this is exactly what I'm looking for。 My deeply rational brain might feel happy for those people that describe how they managed to completely change their lives for the better after a near-death experience or another traumatic experience, but it doesn't see these stories as a source of motivation。 It almost categorise them as "miracles", as events that in some rare cases happen but which definitely aren't related to us。At the same time, however, when my brain is presented with loads of data and scientific research it starts thinking "maybe I should really listen to what this person is saying。。。"。 Sure, this won't lead to a sudden and abrupt change in my lifestyle, but knowing that just 1 hour of exercise per week (again, info backed up by research) can help fight depression in the future is totally enough to convince my lazy brain that a couple workouts a week won't kill me。The book doesn't describe simply the relationship between exercise and depression。 Each chapter highlights the positive impacts of physical exercises on differents aspects of our minds: from our mood, to our creativity, to our mental age, to possible cases of addiction。The scientific explanations are precise but at the same time simple enough to be understood by everyone, and knowing how our body actually works and why we feel in a certain way in specific occasions is really comforting。 Plus, even though I already have a fitness plan I'm trying to follow, I appreciated the fact that the author provided a fitness plan for each chapter that gradually increases in difficulty。 I'm sure it will be a huge help for all those who want to start exercises but are at a loss regarding where to start from。 。。。more
